This release delivers two highly requested feature updates to the Citycast Application.
- Places CSV Import for Layers in the Explorer Tool
- The Addition of Block Group Geography Support for the Popcast Tool
In addition, we are delivering improvements to the Placecast Dashboard Tool as well.
Places CSV Import for Layers in Explorer
We have received many user requests to import a list of their own places. As a result, we’ve created a new feature called “CSV Importer.”
The CSV Importer is the first step towards giving users the ability to upload their own places and view them in the application as a map layer in Explorer tools (Inventory and Population).
While this feature is now accessible to users, there are a few limitations as we continue to develop this feature.
- Unless your imported place is matched to an existing measured place in the application, measured insights will not be returned on place uploads.
- Currently, the imports are limited to 100 places per upload.
In either Inventory Explorer or Popcast when a user goes to the “Layers & Display Options tab” and selects “Place Sets” under Layers they are given the option to Upload Place Set. This will walk users through a wizard to upload their list of places.
Users can include the following fields in their import file (a download of a template is also available in the first step).
- Place Name*
- Latitude*
- Longitude*
- Street Address
- City
- State
- Postal Code
- Country
- Place Type*
*Designates Required Fields
Users will be walked through a wizard where we attempt to match their places against a list of known places to prevent duplicates from being added to the system.
If the user selects the matched place option, then Motionworks matched places will be used instead. This means that the user could potentially see place insights data on their location uploads.
Once completed, users can access their List as a Place Set Layer in Explorer. The list will show up in the Select Places Widget of Placecast products. However, it is important to note, because the likelihood of most or all of the places having data associations is highly likely to be unusable in the other tool applications currently.

Block Group Geography Support for Popcast
Another highly requested feature update we’ve received was the addition of visualizing block group data in the Popcast tool. We are excited to announce this huge data and development update is now being delivered to application users.
This update allows a user to Define Geography Granularity to a Block Group level in Popcast and filter this on Postal Codes or Counties. Users can now view selected population cohorts and observe their movement over time in Popcast at Home and Popcast Anytime as a much more granular geographic area.
At this time, Block Groups are unable to be saved as Geography Sets but all other functionality of Popcast is present.

Index Calculation Bugs and Improvements to Placecast Dashboard
When we initially rolled out Index calculations for Place Set reporting in Placecast Dashboard we noticed a couple of bugs that are being fixed in this release.
In some instances, Index calculations on audiences By Age was showing up in the thousands. Some Demographic data on By Race and By Gender were also returning 0. These calculation bugs have been fixed.
In addition, for large Place Sets of 1,000 or more, the calculations to produce a national index were overwhelming the browsers' ability to process them locally. This has been fixed by moving this calculation to the cloud thus making it possible to produce indices on population cohorts up to the 2,000-place limit currently set on Place Sets.

DMA Column added to the Select Places Widget
We’ve received a large amount of user feedback that being able to see the DMA where a place is located is extremely helpful in building place sets. Based on your feedback, we’ve added a column for DMA to the “Select Places Widget” under ALL PLACES and the ability to Search By DMA.
PLEASE NOTE: that this functionality is not available in MY PLACES. We generate the DMA for a place from its Postal Code so if a place does not have an associated Postal Code, then it will not populate in this column.

Ability to search/filter Geography as Places with Meta Elements
Recently we rolled out the geographies as places feature with the ability to see insights on them in the Placecast Dashboard. One of the limiting functions of this is that it can be extremely hard to create a place set of geographies if you don’t know certain meta elements about those places.
For example, if you want to create a Place Set of Postal Codes or Counties then being able to Filter on a State would be extremely useful. We’ve added the following meta elements to these Geographies as places.
- County – Has information for DMA, CBSA and State it’s located
- Postal Code – Has information on DMA, CBSA, County, and State it’s located
PLEASE NOTE: In the instances where a Postal Code is part of multiple Geographies then all those are also shared. Example: 29661 is part of North and South Carolina.
